The basic strategy against an 1-2 backgame is the same as against a 2-3 backgame: Force your opponent to crunch his board. Almost always, that involves priming.
What you may be experiencing is that it's usually easier for the backgamer to time a 2-3 backgame than a 1-2 backgame. The better the backgamer's timing, the more the backgamee needs to look for aggressive ways to fight for timing, such as bold slots and breaking inner-board points. But priming is still going to be part of the equation 99% of the time.
