Walter Trice "Backgammon Bootcamp" is the best intro/intermediate book out there by a hefty margin.

I'd be cautious about Robertie's 501 since it was written in the pre-bot era and contains a lot of errors. I'd avoid reading anything pre-bot, except for historical interest. The one exception would be Magriel, but even that classic has a fair amount of errors.

BTW, the problems posted here are usually of interest because they are an exception to the usual rules of thumb, or an exception to the usual exceptions. So I'd be careful about trying to draw general conclusions from the positions posted here.
