That's surprising because I thought that XG converged faster than GNU did. But again that was the old version of GNU.

One possible factor is that GNU does a full 36x36 rotation of the dice (if you select pseudorandom dice), which I would expect would reduce the variance somewhat compared to XG, which rotates only the first set of dice rolled.
