Although running is not a natural game plan against an opponent’s early 66, playing a holding game is. If you can advance your anchor, his racing advantage turns into your timing advantage. That’s why splitting is often in the cards. As Neil points out, it is a mixed bag. Splitting invites attack, but not splitting can get you stuck in a 24pt holding game.
The fact that you have your 5pt here is worth a lot. In a simple exchange of hits, your two-point board is better than your opponent’s, and trading hits on his side of the board will improve your standing in the race.
