Scotty,

From a perspective of a not so long ago intermediate player, I can say that working on the opening has contributed tremendously to my overall understanding of the game.

As suggested, I highly recommend buying and reading (and re-reading) the 31 Opening Book. It is an excellent book which provides high level analysis and also teaches you how to approach an early position. I also suggest to allocate a portion of the time you work on your game to study the openings. Start with the 2nd roll for money - know them and work on the logic. It isn't simple and requires self-discipline and dedication especially in the beginning when everything together feels overwhelming and confusing. Work on those 2nd rolls until they become second nature for you. Then, you will see the effect on your game, especially on the first few rolls part.

Once you get to this phase - congrats! now you can take it to where you want and based on your interest. Some explore 2nd rolls ATS. Personally, I have taken it to exploring 3rd rolls which I feel is more beneficial and/or efficient in terms of understanding the game.

The bottom line is that there are no real shortcuts but the hard work is paying off in significant better understanding of the game and acquiring the right tools. While typing this, it made me think of the movie Karate Kid (the original). The process has a lot of "wax on-wax off" but at some point, you realize how much it contributed to your game directly and indirectly.

Having said that I am aware of strong players (some are giants) that invested zero time to work on their openings and you can see it in their game yet they play at a very high level. I am pointing that to let you know that working on the opening isn't necessary (nor sufficient) to improve your game and play at a high level.

Just my 2 cents.
