Mike - Counting pips is a different issue from REMEMBERING the count. When a player is finished counting his pips, the question becomes what devices can he use to remember that count while counting his opponent's pips.

Obviously, he can't write down the count. But can he maneuver objects such as his dice cup, pencil, or scoresheet to particular positions to represent the count. Most respondents say "no".

Then we get to placing fingers on the board to help remember the count. I contend that the board is an improper mechanical aid in that situation. Most people disagree with me. But I see no difference between putting fingers at the 8 and 3 points to remember 83, and just writing down 83. Both acts, in my opinion, violate the rules.
