There is also rule 4.1, which reads in part: "Dice are strictly a means of obtaining random numbers; any other use violates the rules and the spirit of backgammon."

I don't know the purpose of this rule, but maybe the authors were thinking of players using the dice as an aid to calculation?

I like Phil Simborg's story about how he used a coin toss to make a take/drop decision. It's harmless fun, but technically a breach of the rules (not that I think anyone would complain). Presumably rolling the dice to decide on your cube play would also be breaking the rules.
