Perhaps this is an area that could be better clarified. My interpretation tends to follow the lines of Bob Koca’s. Bob cited the ABT rules posted at ChicagoPoint.
ABT Rules: “1.5 AIDS. Once a match is in progress, players shall not use written, mechanical or electronic aids except to keep score.”
Consider putting your dice cup down beside a point on the board. Clearly, that is not a written or electronic aid. Is it a mechanical aid? Although, Tom Keith argues that it is, it does not fit my picture of one. When I read the foregoing rule, I envision an abacus or some similar sort of mechanical device. In particular, a mechanical device needs to have moving parts to be described as such.
Besides, there is little difference between resting ones fingers near a point and placing the dice cup there. Why would we want to allow one and disallow the other?
Similarly, it is clear that finger and hand positions are not written or electronic aids. Are they mechanical devices? I think not. Once again, my interpretation is that the rule above refers to a device of some kind, not a body part.
