Save a 6?

I am not sure I agree with "especially when you trail in the race". If race is close or you are leading then the 6 you save will be one dumped deep into the board.

Agreed. If the race is close, or your lead is small, then you should be careful about wasting pips. In other circumstances, however, the race leader is often well-advised to save a 6, even at the cost of crashing his board and wasting pips. The point I was trying to make is that saving a 6 will be correct more often for the race leader than for the trailer.

In some ways, the issue is irrelevant for the leader in this position. He will usually play safe when he can, even though his lead will only be 5 pips when he gets the dice. Timing issues, I think, more than the pip count, motivate the leader to pay later.

So what should the trailer do about that? Well, that is question I need help with (since I got it wrong OTB).
