I really didn't know what the intention of the question was. You could mean star in the eyes of fans/people or a star in the sense of career accomplishments. Two very different things. Now that it's somewhat defined I'll see if I can come up with anything more than the obvious which could be right. (Jordan)

Are you counting things that we might think of as games as sports? In other words, is Bobby Fischer etc... eligible?

Also, how you phrased it, you want this person to be American or can they simply be a huge success in an American based sport? (Silva)

You'll eventually have people pulling Babe Didrikson out of their arses or Tony Hawk. You said 'sports star' and not 'athlete' so it leaves someone like Tony Hawk as a real candidate. I doubt you count horses due to the lack of 'career' but that's also worth clarifying.
