That's all true — repeater shots tend to diminish, and are also hard to calculate — reason enough, usually, not to bother going too deep in analysis. But extra chances can add up, and when the initial position left is dangerous, they can expect to add up to extra extra chances. So, my not-deep analysis, with regard to 4/off 1/off, is that leaving the odd and only spare on the highest point is known to be awkward and dangerous, and will only rarely be right. I didn't consider that play any further, instead allotting my time to choosing between 5/1 4/3 and 5/off.
