Using Character Map to enter a Pound sign

I am able to select and copy the symbol from charmap and pasting it into notepad. However the alt+0163 doesn't work for me, nothing appears in notepad. I am pressing alt and typing +0163 and then releaseing alt. What am I doing wrong?

For this method to work, you have to use the numbers on the number pad. You cannot use the numbers above the alphabet keys.

  1. Press and hold the Alt key. Do not release it until all four numbers have been entered.
  2. Tap out 0 1 6 3 on the number pad.
  3. Release the Alt key.

You can enter all sorts of characters this way. Alt+0147 and Alt+0148, for instance, give you “matching (slanted) left and right double quotes.”
