Here's a dilemma if playing legal moves

I believe we are all pretty much in agreement here, Bob. But let's say that I make a very stupid deal with someone and give him 40 percent of my action at the largest tournament in the country. And let's just say I happen to make it to the finals. And let's say I'm playing one of the greatest players of all time, someone like, say, Senk.

And now, Senk accidentally picks up his dice when he only meant to move them before hitting my checker in a crucial point in the match. The rules say his dice are up and his turn is over. But I know and he knows that he was just being a little sloppy or distracted and there is no way he would not have hit that checker. But I now have the choice of whether to allow his error to stand, or I can choose to be "a good sport" and let him correct it, hit the checker, and probably with the match.

Aside from you, there are three people who bought me in the calcutta. Okay, let's assume, as Tom Keith and Jeb believe, that I owe them no consideration whatsoever. Do I owe it to you, who has 40 percent of the action, to make Senk live by the rules. Do you think you "wouldn't mind" if I just let him hit my checker? What about everyone else in the tournament that expected me to do my best to win within the rules? What about other people in the ABT race that might be affected if my opponent wins the tournament instead of me?

Should I really have the right, on my own, to decide which rules are going to be strictly enforced and which will not be? I think that is the first question. And then the next question is, if I do have the right to make that decision, should some consideration be given to others that might be affected by the outcome? And then there is the question as to whether I should let him go back and hit me or not? I maintain that to the last question, there is no sure right or wrong answer. The first question I would ask myself is this: what would Senk do if the situation were reversed? But honestly, I don't know, and I certainly would not blame him if he made my play stand.

The next question is, how would I react and feel if I had made the error? I know, believe it or not, I would not only NOT ask for mercy, if offered I would graciously thank my opponent and reject it. I would insist, because of the integrity of the game and the rules, to be penalized for my mistake. And then, I would have no problem sleeping that night by not giving my opponent leniency in this situation. The problem is this: others might think I was a jerk. Others not not believe me when I say that I would not accept an offer of mercy if the situation were reversed. Well, I'll just have to live with that. It won't be the first time people thought I was a jerk and it won't be the first time people didn't believe me!

Now, back to the first question, Bob....if I choose to be "kind" to my opponent and you had 40% of the action, would you feel I have not lived up to our agreement?
