Thanks, Patrick. You don't need to preach the pro-clock sermon to me; I'm in the choir. My real question is exactly the question that I stated. I have enough experience with (analog) clock management in chess that I wouldn't time out regardless of the time control. I'm just trying to get a sense of whether I should get faster at pip counting and whether I should memorize take points as well as just a raw MET. From what I gather, I sense I'm near the borderline and would probably benefit from improving in those areas.
