In Response To: A US Backgammon Tournament rule query from R.G.B. (Phil Simborg)

- Many believe that in the spirit of good sportsmanship, this rule should not apply.

There are at least two other, fairer ways to characterize this position:

  • Many believe that 4.4 overrides 4.8
  • Many believe that 1.1 should be applied in this scenario

    - I owe it to ... my calcutta teammates

This argument carries absolutely no weight whatsoever with me. A side bet about which you had no choice and no involvement should have no bearing on how you approach and play the game. If I come up to a match you are playing and tell another spectator "I'll put $1 on Phil" and he says "OK," do you owe me anything?

    - Should I let him fast roll? Should I let him lift the cube and change his mind? Should I let him pick up the dice and then decide to make another move?

No. And, with the current rules, you shouldn't "let" him take his borne off checker off the bar, either. You should have the director apply the rules as she interprets them (1.1, 4.4 or 4.8)

Unless, of course, you have agreed to play Legal Plays. Said agreement being completely allowable within the current rules, you should simply tell your opponent to remove the checker from the bar.
