Thank you for the stats about chess, Daniel. I never would have guessed that there were so few active tournament chess players in the US. I think of the chess world as huge compared to backgammon, and this suggests otherwise.
For the first part of the question: I'll say "5", since it's unimportant to me personally, but OTOH I don't have any objections either. Maybe it would be good to do some research first, if it's possible to get meaningful numbers, to show whether it would "grow the game" or not. This idea could be one that sounds good but has unexpected consequences. For example, it's possible that the thought of getting poor results and having it all over Facebook might keep younger Intermediate players away from rated events.
I get uneasy when I read posts about what chess has, what bridge has, what golf has, etc. followed up with the conclusion that backgammon needs the same thing. Backgammon is different enough from any other game that what other games have or do, may transfer well...or not.
About the only attribute of other games that I'm sure we could use, is corporate sponsorship! We all seem to agree that we want it, but despite this demand, at the moment there appears to be no supply.
