It is generally reckoned that backgammon originated in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) in about 3000 BC. The oldest dice (made from human bone) and dated to that time period were discovered in the region a few years ago.

The best book for a short history of the game, including some excellent pictures, is the hardback version of "The Backgammon Book" by Jacoby and Crawford. The book has been out of print for a long time but you can still find the occasional copy in second-hand book shops or on eBay.
