In Response To: Why are the Daily Quizzes so unpopular? (Timothy Chow)

Timothy Chow: Bill Calton silently protested that the answers were not posted, adding that he knew he could put the positions into a bot, but he was too lazy. But for some time now, I've been posting XGR+ evals of all the Daily Quizzes, so that explanation no longer makes any sense.

His answer never made any sense.

A more plausible explanation is that Stick has fallen enormously behind his writing of the Recaps.

I really don't think that's the problem.

...

What do you think? If the Daily Quiz were reduced to a single position a day, would you be more likely to respond to it?

I dunno, maybe. It's simple for me. I'm busy. I pretend to have a life. I have a job, and I have to commute to work. When I get home, there's a million things I want to do. I have a lot of interests... I read, watch baseball, and I want to think a little bit about backgammon. On the weekends, I get the chance to get away from other things in life... take a bike ride, get away from the house and do fun stuff with my girlfriend, maybe take the dogs to the park or go on a hike. There's a lot of stuff there, and only one time did I mention backgammon. Yeah, I wish I had more time to think about backgammon, but I don't. I want to become a better player, but I don't seem to have the time to devote to studying and playing and studying. These aren't excuses... they're facts of life. One of the reasons I'm never having kids is that I don't have enough time for myself, let alone some ankle biter.

Chuck Bower: 2) Public humiliation avoidance.

There's a pretty bad culture on this site, and the people who perpetrate it aren't willing to admit it. "NEXT!!!" and "donkey" are not helping, but it's as much about attitude as it is the words. The words that you say during a chouette makes you a jokester and draws smiles -- the same words on an internet forum make you look like an asshole. It gets discussed, but nobody wants to change. You can use your fun lingo and attitude, or you can create a more welcoming environment that encourages more participation, but you cannot have it both ways.
