I agree that the public humiliation factor is a big part of it. Most people don't have the courage, or whatever you want to call it, to look like an idiot in public. Furthermore, I don't think that there is necessarily any correlation with how good you are. Some people in the top 10 could feel that they have something to lose by publicly saying something stupid, whereas a weaker player might feel that they have nothing to lose.
