Thanks for the elucidation, Mike.

I suppose one could use Arial Unicode for most letters, and resort to another solution for BEFIJPRT overbars and gjq underscores (though the need will be infrequent):

    (a) Find a font for each character that works better
    (b) Use the html hack (paste the long character line)
    (c) Find pre-combined characters

An example of (c) is that in the character map (which I usually access in MS-Word by Insert/Symbols/More Symbols), Arial Unicode MS character 0112 is a "Capital Letter E with Macron," which I can copy/paste directly from an MS-Word doc to here and looks like this:

However, if I try to view it in my usual browser IE8 (with Windows XP), it looks like this:

    Ç
