Underlines and overbars

Thanks, Michael. Let me try it.

Using html, the hierarchy of {upper/lower case, italic, overbar, bold} looks like this:
A a A a A̅ a̅ A̅ a̅ A a A a A̅ a̅ A̅ a̅

...or with Tem's trick it looks like this:
A a A a A a A a A a A a A a A a

Sure enough, as you say both versions work. The second is better aligned vertically, though it requires cutting and pasting a long line (or typing 50 characters) instead of typing the 5 characters of & #773.

In the html version, the overbars are unreadable (show up as boxes) on my Windows XP / IE8 browser.

For completeness, the respective underlined letter versions (though applying all underscores with html) look like this:
