I agree that inside help is the most likely explanation. However, skilled cheats use the same techniques that close-up magicians use. The vast majority of people think that they're much better observers than they really are. Probably a skilled operator could slide a die occasionally even without inside help. They would not do it every time, of course. They'd wait for an opportune moment when people's attention is diverted. The die might not be literally "slid" but might be tossed in a way that is biased, and close enough to the wall and the other die that someone who's not paying full attention might be unsure whether both dice bounced off the wall.

If you think that you would notice dice sliding for sure then you might want to ask yourself if you've ever been puzzled by a trick performed by a professional magician, and reassess your own observational skills accordingly.
